Biertan Fortified Church
Choose Biertan if you want a Saxon fortified church you can count on finding open from spring to autumn. It keeps regular hours, which makes it the safe choice and also the crowded one.

Copșa Mare Fortified Church
A gothic church on a ridge above a village of painted houses, with a wall walk that looks over the whole Târnave valley. The village has become a quiet base for walkers. It sits two kilometres above Biertan on a track, and the wall walk is reached by a ladder inside the tower.

Richiș Fortified Church
A church five kilometres south with Cistercian detailing and carved capitals unusual for a village of this size, restored slowly with German help. The key is held in the village. The Cistercian work shows in the chancel, and the road ends here, so the church is usually empty.

The Apafi Manor
A sixteenth century manor house in a Saxon village, restored by a heritage trust with lime plaster and period furniture, and let as a whole house to one party at a time. The garden runs behind it, meals are arranged with the caretaker, and the fortified church is a short walk up the lane.
