Things to do in Biertan

Why you should go

Ninety seconds on Biertan

A village in the Târnave hills whose fortified church stands on a mound in the middle of it inside three rings of wall. It was the seat of the Saxon Lutheran bishops for nearly three hundred years, which is why a place of eight hundred people has a monument of this scale. The surrounding villages are the point as much as Biertan itself. Half a dozen fortified churches sit within ten kilometres, most of them unlocked by a neighbour with a key rather than a ticket office.

  1. Biertan Fortified Church

    Biertan Fortified Church

    Church · 1.5 hr

This is the one that keeps regular hours, which among the Saxon churches makes it both the safe choice and the crowded one. It also shuts for an hour in the middle of every day, and through the winter it shuts on Mondays as well.

  2. Copșa Mare Fortified Church

    Church · 30 min

A gothic church on a ridge above a village of painted houses, with a wall walk that looks over the whole Târnave valley. The village has become a quiet base for walkers.

  3. Richiș Fortified Church

    Church · 30 min

A church five kilometres south with Cistercian detailing and carved capitals unusual for a village of this size, restored slowly with German help. The key is held in the village.

  4. The Apafi Manor

    Hotel

A sixteenth century manor house in a Saxon village, restored by a heritage trust with lime plaster and period furniture, and let as a single house rather than by the room.
