Things to do in Zărnești

Why you should go

Ninety seconds on Zărnești

A small industrial town that is the trailhead for the Piatra Craiului, a limestone ridge twenty five kilometres long and in places only a few metres wide. The gorge at the edge of town is the usual way in. It is also where Europe's largest brown bear sanctuary took in animals from circuses and restaurant cages. A genetic census published in 2025 put the country's brown bears at between 10,400 and 12,800, more than any country outside Russia, and this is the one place a visitor can see them without a hide or a bait station.

    Libearty Bear Sanctuary

    Park · 2 hr

The doors open to visitors for two morning tours and not otherwise, because the bears are not to be disturbed for the rest of the day. That one rule says what the place is: a sanctuary that admits visitors, not an attraction that keeps bears.

    Piatra Craiului National Park

    Park · 6 hr

Bear and lynx density on the forest approach is high enough that the standing advice is to walk in groups and make noise under the trees. It is the rare hill walk where going quietly is the wrong instinct.

  3. La Om Peak

    Viewpoint · 8 hr

The highest point of the Piatra Craiului at 2,238 metres, reached along the ridge on an exposed line with chains on the harder steps. It is a full day from the town and not a walk to start late.

  4. Zărnești Gorge

    Canyon · 2.5 hr

A limestone gorge two kilometres long at the northern end of the ridge, walked on a gravel road closed to cars, with walls that close to a few metres apart. It is the standard approach to the Curmătura hut.

Over 10,000 Bears and Three Ways to See One

Romania's first genetic bear census put the population at up to 12,770, well above the estimate its cull policy was built on. From Zărnești, under the Piatra Craiului, the three honest ways to see a bear: a sanctuary of animals taken out of cages, a baited hide that guarantees nothing, and tracking on foot that usually ends with prints rather than an animal.
