Things to do in Andermatt

Why you should go

Ninety seconds on Andermatt

A village at the crossing of the country, where the roads over the Gotthard, Furka and Oberalp passes meet in one valley at 1,437 metres. Whoever wanted to move an army through the Alps came here, and the Swiss garrison only left in the 2000s. What replaced it is a resort built almost from nothing since 2009. The passes are the reason to come: three of the great Alpine roads open from here in June and the Glacier Express runs through all year.

  1. Schoellenen Gorge

    Schoellenen Gorge

    Canyon · 1.5 hr

The gorge below the village where the Reuss cuts through granite, impassable until a bridge was hung there in the thirteenth century and the route to the Gotthard opened. The Devil's Bridge and the Russian memorial carved into the cliff are both here.

  2. Furka Pass

    Viewpoint · 3 hr

A road pass at 2,429 metres west of the village, open from about June to October, running past the Rhone glacier and its ice grotto. The chase scene in Goldfinger was filmed on it and the road has not changed much since.

  3. Gotthard Pass

    Viewpoint · 3 hr

The pass that made the country, at 2,106 metres, carrying the road from German-speaking Uri into Italian-speaking Ticino. The old cobbled Tremola road switchbacks below the modern one and is still driveable.

  4. Oberalp Pass

    Viewpoint · 2 hr

The pass east at 2,044 metres, carrying the Matterhorn Gotthard railway and the road to Graubunden, with the source of the Rhine a walk of about ninety minutes above it at Lai da Tuma.

  5. The Chedi

    Hotel

A hotel of 2013 that started the rebuilding of the village, in dark timber and stone with fireplaces through the public rooms and a pool under a glass roof. It brought a standard to the Urner Alps that had not been there before.
