Diavolezza
A cable car station at 2,978 metres facing the Bernina wall across the glacier, which is the closest anyone gets to Piz Palue and the Biancograt without roping up. The sunrise trip runs in summer and the descent on skis across the Pers glacier is a classic spring tour.

Morteratsch Glacier
The largest glacier in the Bernina range, with a marked trail from the station that has posts showing where the ice stood in each decade since 1878. The walk to the present snout takes an hour and the posts are the clearest account of retreat anywhere in the Alps.

Bernina Railway
A metre-gauge line over the Bernina pass to Tirano in Italy, a UNESCO site since 2008, climbing to 2,253 metres with no rack and turning through the Brusio spiral viaduct on the way down. It is open all year and the descent drops nearly two thousand metres.

Grand Hotel Kronenhof
A neo-baroque house of 1848 looking down the Roseg valley, with painted ceilings, a curling rink and a pool that ends in glass over the view. It is the quieter of the Engadine's two great hotels and the one with the better outlook.

Santa Maria Church
A small Romanesque church beside the tower on the hill above the village, holding thirteenth-century frescoes of the legend of Saint Mary Magdalene that are among the oldest wall paintings in the canton. It is opened for a short season only.

Val Roseg
A glacier valley closed to cars, walked or reached by horse carriage from the station, ending at a milky lake under the Roseg and Sella glaciers. It is flat for the first hour and the larch forest along it turns in the first week of October.
