Ninety seconds on Weggis

A village on the north shore of Lake Lucerne under the Rigi, with a climate mild enough for figs and palms and no through road until 1860, when the only way in was by boat. The steamers still call and it is the pleasant way to arrive. It is the foot of the Rigi's cable car and a quieter base than Lucerne, twenty minutes away by boat across the water.

    Sunny and car-free, this terrace at 1,433 metres on the Rigi above Weggis is reached by cable car from the village or by rack railway from Vitznau. Mario Botta's mineral bath of 2012 lies beneath the square, lit by glass skylights. The old Scheidegg railway bed now makes a level panoramic path along the flank.

    Viewpoint · 1.5 hr

    A viewpoint above Weggis reached on foot or from Rigi Kaltbad, looking straight down onto the bay and across to Pilatus. It is the classic postcard of this arm of the lake and about forty minutes of walking from the cable car.
